Eastern Flood Response in Noakhali 2025

In July 2025, intense monsoon rainfall, tidal surges, and drainage failures led to severe flooding across coastal Bangladesh, with Noakhali District among the hardest hit. The disaster affected over 230,000 people, including 44,000+ households, and displaced more than 12,000 individuals into temporary shelters.

The Worst-affected Areas

  • Kabirhat Upazila: Ghoshbagh (132 households) and Dhanshiri (134)
  • Companyganj Upazila: Char Kakra (132) and Char Fakira (132)

Flood-affected communities faced critical shortages of safe drinking water, food, and sanitation. Overcrowded shelters increased risks for women, adolescent girls, and pregnant and lactating mothers, while health issues such as diarrhoea and skin infections rose. Education and essential services were also disrupted due to facility closures.

In response, the Participatory Research and Action Network (PRAAN), with funding from the START Fund Network, supported 530 vulnerable households, prioritising female-headed households, people with disabilities, the elderly, and those in temporary shelters. Each household received:

  • BDT 6,000 in multipurpose cash assistance
  • Customized hygiene kits addressing sanitation, SRH, and protection needs

To address additional vulnerabilities, 15 households with persons with disabilities received top-up cash support beyond the standard assistance.
