Good health is considered as one of the basic rights of a human being. And with the term “right to health” refers that everyone should have access to the health services they need, when and where they need them, without suffering financial hardship. No one should get sick and die just because they are poor, or because they cannot access the health services they need. However, in the real world, there are thousands of children and people who do not have access to health services. And in the underprivileged area of Bakalia, it has been seen that though people are suffering from different health issues, hardly they try to avail health services because of their economic insolvency and unconsciousness.

Since Bakalia is an urban area, there are available health facilities. However, due to the distance from government health service centers and in some contexts poor mode of services, the community is reluctant to take services from government hospitals. On the other hand, due to the high cost of private health centers, the poor community is hardly taken services from nearby ones. In this circumstance, during the celebration of Child Rights Week in 2022, ActionAid Bangladesh organized a health camp in Bakalia. In this endeavor, its partner organization, Bright Bangladesh Forum and Rotary Club in Chattagong, Sagorika assisted to arrange the camp. Under the supervision of 05 doctors, specializing in medicine, pediatrics, genealogist, and dermatologist, treatment was provided for 340 people including 303 children in a daylong camp on 07th October 2022.

On the camp day, there was a help desk where people primarily shared their health issues; the help desk assisted them to connect with the relevant doctor’s desk. After the checkup, people also received basic medicines. Apart from providing treatment, there was a discussion on hygiene practices and how to keep healthy for parents and children.

Mim (12), one of the beneficiaries shared that “I went to health camp. Sharing my health issue at the help desk, and they send me to a Pediatric doctor. The doctor prescribed me some medicine and asked me to take enough sleep and drink water. I hope I will recover soon”.

Sanju (11) told, “I and my mother went to the health camp. We joined in the discussion session and learned that we can keep ourselves safe at least from 20 types of diseases if we regularly wash our hands. Besides, I also took treatment from the doctor and got medicine for free. My family is glad to get this type of support”.
