Some activities are planned to cope against natural disasters of different vulnerabilities. The activities are mainly intended to strengthen the capacity of the community awareness building and skill training. It has worked so well that the community took the lead in facilitating the analysis process and enhance their understanding on the vulnerability and risks they are facing.

Let’s take one example on how ActionAid Bangladesh takes approach to reduce risks to disasters. The following components came out as a programmatic approach to reduce the vulnerability of disasters, such as Flood:

  • Climate Resilient Household: a model for flood prone Sirajganj

Homestead‐raising:

Raised homestead is one of the most effective strategies to protect homes from loss of assets due to regular flooding. It is also essential to facilitate in building multi‐hazard resilient houses.

House construction:

Most houses in the project area are made with thatches, bamboo,  etc. with untreated earth base. Every year during flood these houses go under water and get severely damaged. Lessons from housing construction in 2008  were incorporated to make the houses stronger against flood and extreme wind risks.

Provisioning drinking Water and safe sanitation:

It is essential to reduce the risk of water‐unavailability and different health hazards caused by scarcity of safe drinking  water and safe sanitation. The tube-well was installed to help households to manage water.

Promoting  Alternative  livelihood (Improved  spinning wheel/ charka):

To promote a better livelihood for women and increased resilience to vulnerabilities, this project from ActionAid Bangladesh has introduced a four spin Charka with improved technology to the community. This improved Spinning Wheel increased the spinning rate of thread and their income four times higher compared to the previous.
